Re-Roofing
Re-Roofing
The most valuable asset we all own are our homes. Our whole world lives under one roof but it is easy to not see the imperfections and degradation of each tile, felt, battens and mortar. When they do eventually fail the problems can be instant, catastrophic and extremely costly.
A general tile can last a lifetime, much longer than some of the felts and battens that were originally used. What makes a tile so good at protecting your home is the surface of the tile. When each tile is made a non-porous surface is created after firing. Over time, the surface wears down due to erosion from the elements and are no longer non-porous, effectively making the tiles absorb water and leak through.
This happens at a very slow rate and most tiles can be porous for years, relying on the felt beneath to protect the home. This also leads to batten failure and then tile slippage. This is a critical point where a roof needs replacing.
Failed and cracked mortar can also lead to a large amount of water ingression. There is no better way to regard your roof as the absolute first defence your home has from the day to day elements.
Knowing how a re-roof is carried out and the materials used is important because these are the processes that your home will be protected from for years to come should you choose us.
Stage 1
Removal of the old roof is done in stages and always so that the area taken off can be made water tight in the same day. Starting from the top down so that all rubble and detritus can be swept down the existing felt. Each tile is then stacked for reuse or lowered to be discarded. Carpentry work applied where needed to the trusses and valley boards
Stage 2
Our breathable felt is then installed from the bottom up once the old felt and battens are removed. Overlaps measured and battens gauged with the consideration of tile positioning and, again, overlaps. This is very critical as most leaks can result from capillary action.
Stage 3
Once battens are nailed down, tiles are stacked and laid with equal overhang on verges and cut to the angles of valleys etc. A very short description of a very arduous stage but it is a time where the roof starts to become transformed.
Stage 4
Once tiles are laid then all that is left to do is cement and lead work. A very popular product being installed are dry verges and dry ridge systems that are just as effective as mortar. Once the ridges have been laid, verges trowelled up and valleys laid, all that is left to do is clean up the site and disassemble any scaffold
Stage 5
Enjoy not having that worry over your head! Literally! To say roofing is an honest day’s work for honest day’s pay could never be more accurate. Our roofs come with industry led guarantees for all the products we use, alongside workmanship guarantees.
